四面に「S」字状の文様を連続して彫り込んだ、蓋付きの壁掛け箱。スウェーデンをはじめとする北欧の民家では、当時貴重品であった塩を湿気から守るため、暖炉のそばに専用の壁掛け箱（ソルトボックス）を吊るす習慣がありました。四面に施された連続する「S」字文様は、彫刻刀で木地を浮き彫りにする北欧民藝特有の装飾技法によるもので、幾何学的な反復文様は当時の農村工芸に広く見られる意匠です。 アーチ形にくり抜かれた持ち手兼吊り手が上部に付き、台所で塩や香辛料を保管する「ソルトボックス」の典型的な形です。スウェーデン、18〜19世紀。

A lidded hanging box with a continuous "S"-motif carved into all four sides. In Scandinavian farmhouses, salt — a precious commodity at the time — was traditionally kept dry by hanging a dedicated wooden box near the hearth. The continuous "S"-motif was made using the relief-carving technique characteristic of Nordic folk craft, in which a knife or gouge raises the pattern from the wood's surface; this kind of repeating geometric motif is widely found in the rural folk art of the period. An arch-shaped cutout at the top doubles as a handle and hanging loop — the classic form of a "salt box" used in the kitchen to keep salt or spices. Sweden, 18th–19th century.
