丸みを帯びた胴に、大きく弧を描く把手と小さな注ぎ口を持つ、炻器製の水差し。フランス中部ベリー地方のラ・ボルヌは、中世から続く炻器（ストーンウェア）の産地として知られ、粘土に含まれる鉄分と、薪窯での焼成中に灰が降りかかって生じる自然釉（灰釉）や、塩を投入して発色させる塩釉によって、器ごとに異なる景色が生まれます。 炻器は陶器よりも高い温度で焼き締められ、吸水性の低い丈夫な焼き物になるため、水や酒を扱う日用の器として重宝されました。灰がかったベージュの肌に鉄分による黒褐色の斑点が散り、肩から口元にかけては塩釉特有のオレンジピール状の質感がうっすらと現れています。フランス、19〜20世紀初頭。

A stoneware pitcher with a rounded body, a handle drawn in a large arc, and a small spout. La Borne, in the Berry region of central France, has been known since the Middle Ages as a stoneware-producing center, where iron in the local clay, combined with natural ash glaze formed as wood-fired kiln ash settles on the pieces, or with salt glazing achieved by introducing salt into the kiln, gives each piece its own individual character. Fired at a higher temperature than earthenware, stoneware becomes dense and low in water absorption, making it well suited to everyday vessels for water or wine. Its ash-beige body is speckled with dark iron flecks, with a faint orange-peel texture typical of salt glaze appearing around the shoulder and mouth.France, 19th-early 20th century.
